A web app that allows users to split bills exactly with friends and family.
Smart Split is a website that allows you to split a bill between friends exactly. It calculates how much money each person owes including tips and tax. The website also allows you to split individual items between people.
The publicly available version of Smart Split unfortunately does not support receipt scanning due to hosting limitation. However, if you download the project from the GitHub Repo receipt scanning should work out of the box. Simply upload your receipt and wait. The currency delimiter(Either a period or a comma depending in your region) can be modified in Settings > Features > Receipt Scanning
Smart Split lets your save people you often split a bill with. You can manage your list of people by going to Settings > People. There you can add, edit, and remove people.
Smart Split also lets you store groups of people. If you often split a bill with two or more different groups of people. For example, roommates, and your group of friends. You can place only your roommates in the roommate group, while having another group for all your friends. To use groups you will need to add people first. You can manage your groups by doing to Setting > Groups. There you can add, edit, and remove groups.
To add an item simply press Add Item, give it a name, amount, and quantity. Then select who all will be splitting that item. Note: If you have an item with a quantity over one and your receipt has already added up the total of however many items you had, then keep the quantity at 1. The quantity should only be set if your receipt lists the price per item rather than the total.
My friends and I were eating at a restaurant and needed to split the bill. An even split was far from fair, but it would have been a lot of work to do the math in your head. I created a Google Sheet that allowed us to split each item, and the tax on each person's split. After using the Google Sheet a few times, I decided to make a website that would make the process easier.
I am now on the second iteration of Smart Split, third if you count the original Google Sheet. In its current state Smart Split does the job it was built to do.
There are certainly improvements that can be done. Smart Split is open source, if you would like to contribute you are more than welcome to fork the repository and submit a PR with your changes.
(Context: Some of this project and other projects' details sections were updated with the website rewrite.)
Word of warning, this an older project. There is no README, however, the project is pretty simple and if you know your way around Next.js or even just React, it's not too bad. This was written pre-app router, or at least before I started using it.
